Joy believes the client’s involvement in all stages of decision making is vital. Prior to the first sitting, planning will begin via phone and/or e-mail as the general aspects of the portrait (mood, size, setting, etc.) are discussed. The initial meeting, which typically lasts one to two hours, will take place at the client’s chosen location. Clothing, lighting, tone, composition, and all other elements will be considered, and 75-150 photos will be taken. The artist will complete a brief charcoal study of the subject. Together, she and the client will then review the photographs to decide on the tone, expressions and composition. If necessary, additional photos can be taken. The selected photographs and sketches will be used as the artist’s references for creating the portrait in her studio. Upon completion of the portrait, a meeting is arranged for the final sitting of the subject and the portrait’s delivery. The artist can create the portrait from available photographs if the subject is not available (such as a posthumous portrait). |
